Granite Falls girls get car-camp invitation
By Eric Stevick Herald Writer
GRANITE FALLS -- It will be a different kind of summer camp for Granite Falls Middle School girls.
For a $75 registration fee, the school district is sponsoring a two-day "Mini Eco Car" summer academy for middle and high school girls. Scholarships are available.
The two-day camp is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18 and 19.
The camp will offer the middle school girls an inside look at the technology and science of car design, including scale models, testing in the wind tunnel, aerodynamic performance and machine engineering.
Dozens of girls from Granite Falls High School make up an all-girls' Eco-Marathon team that will build a fuel-efficient car to compete in a national competition next spring.
Event organizers believe Granite Falls will have the first all-girl team to enter the Shell Co. competition, which is an annual event for students to build a car that can go the greatest distance on the least amount of fuel. Typically, only a handful of girls participate.
A $10,000 federal grant that aims to prepare girls for high-demand jobs in nontraditional fields got the car-building project rolling. The girls will hone their skills in drafting, engineering, math, computer science, computer-aided design, marketing and communication.
The high school hopes the summer camp will inspire incoming freshmen girls to join the car-manufacturing team in the fall, said Kathy Grant, a school district spokeswoman.
"They will be building some of their own scale models and testing them," Grant said. "They will get to work in the high school's manufacturing lab and get experience on some of the equipment."
Registration is open for girls in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
