Front porch: ACLU's detention talk

Discuss Guantanamo Bay and torture with a board member of the Washington State chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

The event is planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Multipurpose Building, 141 N. East Camano Drive, Camano Island.

What should be done with Guantanamo detainees? Under what circumstances is torture justified?

Camano Island Democrats sponsored the event and all are welcome.



Lower flags today:
Gov. Chris Gregoire said flags at all Washington state agency facilities will be lowered to half-staff today.

The honor is in memory of Washington National Guard Spc. Samuel D. Stone, 20, of Port Orchard, who died when the vehicle in which he was riding overturned in Tallil, Iraq.

Flags should remain at half-staff until the close of business today, or first thing Tuesday morning.

Other people may lower their flags, too.



Bicycle helmets available:
Lake Stevens Fire District 8 has bicycle helmets for sale.

The helmets are available for $10 at Lake Stevens Fire Station 82, 9811 Chapel Hill Road. Helmets will be fitted for each person.

City law requires anyone under the age of 18 to wear a helmet while riding a bike, skateboard or scooter in the Lake Stevens city limits, according to the fire district. Children not wearing a helmet may have their bike, skateboard or scooter confiscated by Lake Stevens police, and a parent or guardian must pay $60 to retrieve it.
