Angels draft Locker, who'll stay at UW

University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker was somewhat flattered by the Los Angeles Angels' decision to use a 10th-round pick on him in Wednesday's Major League Baseball draft.

But the third-year sophomore has no plans to switch sports.

"I'm going to play football at Washington," he said in a conference call Wednesday afternoon.

Locker left open the possibility of signing a future contract with the Angels so that he'll have a fall-back if "the football thing doesn't work out." But he can't hire an agent, or Locker would lose his football eligibility.

Locker was a three-sport star at Ferndale High School, but he said he made it apparent to several teams before the draft that he has no plans to leave the gridiron.

Locker was one of three UW athletes selected among the first 10 rounds Wednesday. Cascade High School product Brian Pearl, a UW relief pitcher, went to Cincinnati in Round 9. Another Husky, outfielder Kyle Conley, went to St. Louis in the seventh round.

Gonzaga pitcher Matt Fields, a Lake Stevens High School product, was a 22nd-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays.
