Arlington: Grow your own groceries

Master gardener Bea Randall plans to offer a free class on growing the ingredients for salsa.

The class is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the community room at the Arlington Boys & Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE.

Participants can learn how to grow heat-loving plants such as tomatoes, peppers, cilantro and onions in the region's cool climate.

Arlington: Spring cleaning disposal

Your ticket's in the mail. With your water-sewer bill, that is.

The city's popular spring cleanup day is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the 188th Street NE entrance, or northwest corner, of Arlington Municipal Airport.

City residents can dump all kinds of junk free.

To get in, though, people need to hang on to a voucher that came in the mail with their monthly utility bills and bring it with them to discard their old stuff.

Acceptable items include refrigerators and freezers, printers, copiers, microwave ovens, keyboards, recyclable metals, old furniture, and tires.

Arlington: Airport runway to close

Runway 16-34 at Arlington Municipal Airport is set to be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 19.

City crews will be on the runway hydro-blasting the runway markings, sweeping and repainting.

Arlington: Seven retirees recognized for 220 years of service

The Arlington School Board on Monday recognized seven employees who are retiring with 220 cumulative years of experience.

They are Lyla Anderson, a middle school librarian; Maureen Arms, a Presidents Elementary School teacher; Sally Cantrell, a Haller Middle School teacher; and Norma Gunderson, a Kent Prarie Elementary School teacher.

Others to be recognized were Warren Hopkins, the district's deputy superintendent; Lynnette Jordan, an Arlington High School special education teacher; and Ken Winkes, the district's director of support services.

Camano Island: How clean is your water?

Lee First of Resources for Sustainable Communities plans to talk about a new mapping tool that identifies water quality concerns and water-dependent natural resources at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 E. Camano Drive.

The presentation is part of a public education series by the Camano Wildlife Habitat Project, sponsored by Friends of Camano Island Parks as part of the Island County watershed project.

Marysville: Outdoor movie series begins

The city of Marysville's annual Popcorn in the Parks Outdoor Cinema Series kicks off with "The Goonies" on June 27.

The movie starts at dusk, about 9 p.m., in Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road.

People may bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. The Marysville Kiwanis Club plans to provide free popcorn for each showing.

Cinema equipment is provided by the Snohomish County-Camano Association of Realtors.

Marysville: Preview Grace Academy

Grace Academy in Marysville is hosting a "preview dessert" event for families who may be considering private school. The event is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. on June 16, at the school, 8521 67th Ave. NE.

Grace Academy is a private Christian school for children in preschool through 12th grade.

The event includes a campus tour, curriculum display, presentations and dessert.

Stanwood: High school track coach retiring

Longtime Stanwood High School track and cross country coach Paul Johnson is retiring.

A retirement and recognition party is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the high school commons room.

Those who attend are asked to bring along a dessert and memories to share.

Stanwood: School calendar available

The Stanwood School District recently posted its calendar for the 2009-10 school year.

The full student calendar can be found on the district's Web site, www.stanwood.wednet.edu.

Key student calendar dates include Sept. 3 as the first day of school, Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 for winter break, Feb 15 and 16 for midwinter break, March 29 through April 2 for spring break, and June 17 for the last day of school.
