ELMA, Wash. - (June 13, 2009) - Glenn Borden Jr. of Raymond and Brandon Daniel of McCleary, made it two feature wins in a row Saturday night At Grays Harbor Raceway. Borden turned the trick in the Whitney’s Auto Group “360 Sprints” 25-lap feature race and Daniel made a late race pass for the win in the Triple X Racing “Ford focus Midgets” 25-lap main event.
Chaz Wilder, Elma, picked up his first career feature win in the Cut Rate Auto Parts “Hobby Stocks” 20-lap main event.
Rory Clevenger, Olympia, led from green flag to the checkered flag in the HiLine Homes “Hornets” 15-lap main event, while the driving team of Dana Austin, Olympia/James Hinkley, Centralia, had help in the 15lap “Cruisers” feature event.
Sprints
Borden took over the lead from Steve Vague, Kirkland, 10-laps into the contest and went on to the win in an almost error free race.
The only caution came out on the start when Shawn Rice, Tacoma and Randy VanAagten, Shelton got sideway in turn-2 at the start, which required a complete restart of the race. All sixteen cars which started the race were still in the race at the finish, with all but five still on the lead lap at the finish.
Logan Forler, Orting had the early lead, followed by Vague, Austin Wheatley, Lake Stevens, Borden Jr. and defending series champion, Jay Cole Shelton.
Vague managed to wrest the lead from Forler six laps into the race, but couldn’t hold off the determined Borden JR.
Cole moved into the second spot midway through the race but was edged by Henry VanDam, Enumclaw on the last lap, while JJ Hickle, Quilcene took fifth and Vague dropped to fifth at the finish.
Midgets
Daniel followed up his first career “Midgets” win last Saturday night when he made a lap-24 pass on defending series champion Jeff Bell, Marysville and a margin of victory of .434 seconds at the finish.
Allison Journey, Springfield, OR. had another good run as she led the first 13-laps of the race with Jonathan Jorgenson, Auburn, Bell, Daniel and Seth Hespe, Snohomish all vying for position behind the leader.
Bell and Jorgenson both got by Journey in front of the grandstand on lap-14 and Daniel eclipsed her 4-laps later.
Daniel took advantage of a yellow flag restart on lap-22 to get by Jorgenson and set out after the leader, getting by Bell with a lap to go.
Bell finished second, Jorgenson third, Journey fourth and Han DeBakker took fifth.
Hobby Stocks
Wilder has been in the shadow of Parshall and Wilder Racing teammate Zack Simpson for the past three years, but Saturday night was his turn in the spotlight.
Wilder started on the outside of the front row, next to Simpson and it looked like Simpson was going to dominate again.
Simpson quickly settled into his customary front running position, followed by Wilder, Eddie Blood, Olympia, Roy Borgenson, McCleary and Alan Muenchow, Shelton.
Wilder took over the top spot when Simpson coasted into the infield with motor problems on lap-5.
Simpson had made some repairs to the car prior to the feature event but when the put the valve cover back on the motor they pinched the gasket which caused an oil leak.
With Simpson out of the picture it was clear sailing for the third year driver.
Wilder dominated the race to the finish with almost a three second victory over Blood, Muenchow took over third late in the race, Bergeson finished fourth and Keith Knowlton, the only other driver to score a feature win this year finished fifth.
Chaz’s father, Roger said after the race, “I don’t know who is the happiest, Me, Zack or Chaz about his win.”
Hornets
Clevenger arrived at the track with a new car for the race and it was a successful move as he dominated the event.
With Clevenger well out in front, it quickly became a contest between Kevin Krenz, Elma and Tyson Blood, Olympia for the left over’s.
And Blood traded places a couple of times during the race, with Blood coming out on top on the final lap. Krenz had to settle for third, Mark Muller, Montesano finished a distant fourth and Alex Coumbs, Olympia fifth.
Cruisers
Austin/Hinkley grabbed the lead on the second lap from Travis Brearty/Brian Brearty, Elma on the second lap. Zeb Conrad, Montesano/Mike DeBoard moved into second on lap-4 and took over the lead with 5-laps left, but the mechanical gremlin jumped up and cut a tire down on them 3-laps from the finish line which gave the lead back to Austin/Hinkley.
Brearty/Brearty finished second, Louis Zoren/Doug Richard, Shelton nabbed third, Conrad/DeBoard faded to fourth and Todd Ramsfield/Doug Richart finished fifth.
The Mountain Dew/Amp Energy Warriors of Dirt Late Models will make their first of two appearances at the track this season along with the Dwarf cars, Modifieds and Hobby Stocks next Saturday night.
Gates open at 4:30 with racing around 7:00.
