Stimulus program hiring jobless
EVERETT -- Recently laid-off people in Snohomish County will soon have a chance to serve their community while earning a small stipend, medical insurance, child care and money for college.
A new AmeriCorps program, funded by federal stimulus money, has created 15 positions in the county for people who have lost their jobs.
To qualify, applicants must be recently laid off, have a high school diploma, be at least 18 years old and pass a criminal background check.
The new AmeriCorps positions are among about 13,000 one-time positions funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Those who are accepted will spend 10 months connecting people to social services through the county's 211 hotline, or they will help assist with home weatherization and energy efficiency efforts.
The positions are being filled as applications are received, said Julie Houghton, an AmeriCorps program director with the Workforce Development Council of Snohomish County. Applications must be received no later than July 1.
Benefits include a living allowance of about $1,100 per month, health care and child care. An education award of $4,725 becomes available upon completion of service.
