Front Porch: Silver in Sultan hills

Historians Daryl Jacobson and Phil Woodhouse plan to discuss the history of mining in the Sultan Basin at the Monroe Historical Society's meeting 6:30 tonight at the Tualco Grange, 18933 Tualco Road, Monroe.

Hear stories of men who hauled copper and silver from mines in Sultan and about those who are still prospecting in the Cascade Range. The Kromona mine operated from 1916 to 1968.

Copies of a three-volume series "Discovering Washington's Historic Mines" will be on sale.

There will be free strawberry shortcake.

Teach teens about money management:
A six-week program begins Tuesday to help teens learn money management.

It begins at 6:30 p.m. at Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St. in Everett.

The Stanwood School District posted its calendar for the 2009-10 school year.

Key student calendar dates include Sept. 3 as the first day of school, Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 for winter break, Feb. 15 and 16 for midwinter break, March 29 through April 2 for spring break and June 17 for the last day of school.
