Boeing to issue pink slips to 150

The Boeing Co. will issue 60-day layoff notices today to 150 workers in the Puget Sound region as the aerospace company trims its work force by 6 percent this year. Workers receiving notices could be laid off as early as Aug. 21. Boeing will hand out pink slips to 250 workers across the company, 140 of them in the commercial airplanes division. Since last November, Boeing has cut 2,450 positions in its commercial airplanes division with the goal of slashing 4,500 jobs there by the end of 2009.

Security program from Microsoft

Microsoft Corp. plans to release a test version of its free computer security program Tuesday. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to find and kill malicious software that steals passwords and other personal information or turns PCs into spam distribution hubs. Once the program is installed, Microsoft says the software will update itself automatically. It will keep a low profile unless dangerous software is detected. Security Essentials will compete with rival subscription programs from McAfee Inc. and Symantec Corp., and with several other free packages. A final version is expected in the fall. After it launches, Microsoft will discontinue Windows Live OneCare.

New job grant adds youth training

A number of Snohomish County agencies received a $576,000 grant to help 32 at-risk students between the ages of 18 and 24 to learn construction skills, the Workforce Development Council Snohomish County announced. The grant from YouthBuild comes from the Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. Besides the Workforce Development Council, the grant will also involve the Center for Career Alternatives, Construction Carnival Task Force, Edmonds Community College, Everett Community College and Housing Hope. YouthBuild lets young people work on their high school diplomas or GEDs while building affordable housing for low-income communities. "Not only does it provide for academic and on-the-job occupational skills training, but it provides meaningful work for at-risk youth in our county," said Sue Ambler, the work force council's CEO.

Tough credit hurts RV sales

Winnebago Industries Inc., the nation's biggest motor home manufacturer, posted a $8.6 million loss in its fiscal third quarter, as revenue continued to crumble in the face of falling sales. The Forest City, Iowa-based company reported a per-share loss of 29 cents per share for the quarter ended May 30. It earned $3 million, or 10 cents per share, last year. Revenue plunged 64 percent to $50.8 million, as motor-home shipments fell 62 percent during the quarter. Chief Executive Robert Olson said lack of access to credit "remains the biggest hurdle."
