Gun stolen from deputy's vehicle on Camano Island
By Katya Yefimova Herald Writer
CAMANO ISLAND -- A sheriff's deputy Saturday morning found his rifle and electronic equipment stolen from his patrol car.
Island County sheriff's detectives are looking for whoever pried open the deputy's Dodge Charger, cracked the weapons lock in the passenger compartment, and stole his Smith & Wesson rifle with a holographic sight, detective Ed Wallace said.
The car was broken into sometime late Friday or early Saturday. A laptop computer, a cell phone and a digital camera were also stolen.
"It's unnerving. It's certainly a brazen thing for somebody to do," Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said.
The car was parked in front of the deputy's Camano Island home. The deputy and his wife were home at the time, Wallace said.
About $6,000 worth of equipment was stolen. The computer contains no sensitive information, he said.
Deputies searched the area with a police dog but found no traces, Wallace said.
Detectives were looking for any evidence left in the car to help identify the suspect.
"It's not something we take lightly," Sheriff Mark Brown said.
Detectives are calling Camano's notorious young burglar, Colton Harris-Moore, a suspect in the case, Brown said. The crime occurred in the general area Harris-Moore burglarized last year.
Whoever is responsible for the crime is looking at several serious charges, Brown said. Disabling a patrol car is a felony.
People on Camano Island should be vigilant and call 911 if they see something suspicious, he said.
