Marysville Strawberry Festival: much more than berries

MARYSVILLE -- Aletha Tatge's young sons were ready for a day of fun.

Tatge and her two boys, 5 and 8 years old, were among hundreds of revelers at the Marysville Strawberry Festival on Saturday.

"It just makes for a fun day for all the kids," said Tatge, standing in line at one of the booths set up on Asbery Field.

The family moved to Lake Stevens last year from San Diego, Calif.

It's nice to be able to distract the boys while their dad is serving in Iraq, Tatge said. She was glad to learn Snohomish County has so many fun things for kids to do.

"It's a good way to be a part of the community," Tatge said.

Dozens of vendors set up shop on Asbery Field. A train carrying half a dozen wide-eyed children and their parents whistled its way through the crowd.

Activities included a strawberry shortcake eating contest, music and carnival rides for kids.

Owners of classic cars got a chance to show off their rides and chat with other car enthusiasts.

Heather Smith gently wiped the dust off her bright-red 1973 Corvette.

Smith and Sharon Langlois, who live in Marysville, have meant to take part in the classic car show for years, but never got around to it until Saturday.

"We always talk about doing it, but we are too lazy," Smith laughed. Saturday was her birthday, and Smith was glad she got out.

Lawn chairs lined up and down State Avenue in preparation for the Grand Parade. It was late in the afternoon when some families already found comfy spots to watch the parade.

The parade is what Billie Nessler, 72, looks forward to the most. "That's always the best," she said.
