NFL Notebook: Estefans buying stake in Dolphins
Associated Press
The Dolphins are merging with Miami Sound Machine and Margaritaville.
Singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan, are buying a "very small" ownership stake in the NFL team, a person familiar with the deal said Monday. The person requested anonymity because the deal won't be announced until Thursday by owner Stephen Ross.
Seven-time Grammy winner Gloria Estefan has had hits with Miami Sound Machine and as a solo artist. Ross began a partnership in May with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville enterprise, which includes Land Shark Lager.
Buffett has yet to accept Ross' invitation to become a minority owner, but the Dolphins' stadium has been renamed Land Shark Stadium for this season. Buffett wrote a song for the team and will be featured at tailgate parties, Ross has said.
Rams' Glover retires
ST. LOUIS -- Veteran defensive tackle La'Roi Glover is retiring after 13 NFL seasons.
Glover, who turns 35 on July 4, spent the past three seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He was not re-signed following the 2008 season, when he had 30 tackles only one-half sack.
He was selected by Oakland in the fifth round of the 1996 draft. After a year with the Raiders, he played five seasons in New Orleans and four in Dallas before signing with the Rams as a free agent prior to the 2006 season.
Glover had 627 tackles and 83.5 sacks for his career. He led the NFL with 17 sacks for the Saints in 2000, a rare feat for a defensive tackle.
Falcons sign sixth-round pick
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons have signed their sixth-round draft choice linebacker Spencer Adkins.
Adkins, 5-foot-11, 246 pounds, had 72 tackles including 10 for a loss, five sacks and one interception in 31 games at Miami. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Falcons have signed five of their eight draft selections, including cornerback Christopher Owens (third round), cornerback William Middleton (fifth round), offensive tackle Garrett Reynolds (fifth round) and defensive tackle Vance Walker (seventh round).
Collins attends minicamp
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers safety Nick Collins showed up for the team's mandatory minicamp, though he clearly doesn't consider his contract situation resolved.
Collins said Monday that he was happy to be back after skipping all but one of the team's voluntary workouts and was committed to the team.
He didn't want to talk about his contract, which runs through the end of this season. Asked if he would show up for training camp if the team didn't redo his deal, Collins said simply: "We'll see."
Coach Mike McCarthy said Collins was in good physical shape and mentally ready to play.
Vikings sign 7th-round pick
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings have signed seventh-round draft pick Jamarca Sanford.
Sanford is a safety who started all 44 games he played at Mississippi and was a team captain during his senior year. Sanford earned SEC defensive player of the week honors after he had 11 tackles in the Rebels' upset of eventual national champion Florida.
