Traffic light robbers try to swim away

LAKE STEVENS -- A wait for a traffic light turned frightening Tuesday night and the incident ended when sheriff's deputies chased down two people who tried to swim away in Lake Cassidy.

It all began just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Highways 9 and 92, Lake Stevens Police Chief Randy Celori said.

That's when a man, 26, driving a pickup truck started spinning his tires behind another vehicle. A woman, 27, jumped out of the passenger side of the truck and went up to the vehicle in front of the truck, Celori said.

The woman slapped the driver of the vehicle and stole her purse, he said. She ran back to the pickup and the man sped off.

Two cars followed the pickup until it crashed into a telephone pole near 99th Avenue, Celori said. The purse was retrieved and the two people in the pickup asked that police not be called.

The pair freed the pickup and again sped off, this time with the woman driving. Police followed the pickup until it crashed into brush near the Lake Cassidy Resort.

Both suspects jumped into the lake and tried to swim away.

Snohomish County sheriff's deputies arrested the pair and they were booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of second-degree robbery.
