Sticking around
Hawkins Gebbers wasn't supposed to remain with the Everett AquaSox when they returned home from their season-opening series at Vancouver.
The infielder from Brewster, the Seattle Mariners' 33rd-round pick in this year's draft out of Biola University, was originally slated to play for Pulaski of the rookie Class A Appalachian League. However, he was diverted to Everett simply because he owned a passport, meaning he was able deal with the recently-enacted new border regulations without complication. Once the team was safely back from Canada, he was supposed to head off to Pulaski.
But Gebbers batted 5-for-12 in the opening series and impressed AquaSox manager John Tamargo enough that Tamargo fought to keep him.
"The way Gebbers goes about his business, he's just a ballplayer," Tamargo explained. "He does the right thing at the right time and has great instincts for the game. I was really happy with him."
Tamargo's arguments proved convincing and Gebbers remains with the Sox, much to his delight.
"I'm excited, I'm really pumped," Gebbers said. "I was pretty much for sure going to Virigina, but I came out and I don't know if it's because I did well or played hard or proved I was a little more mature, but coach told me that night I was staying. He said he was looking forward to working with me and I'm looking forward to working with him.
"It looks like I'll be staying at least a while. I'm not sure if it will be the whole season."
Unfortunately, Tamargo wasn't able to keep both of the players he wanted. Second baseman Fred Bello, another player originally scheduled for Pulaski who helped the Sox get through the opening series, also impressed Tamargo. However, Tamargo wasn't able to convince the Mariners to leave Bello in Everett.
Bello was one of two players who were reassigned following the opening series. Outfielder Mario Yepez was reassigned to Peoria of the rookie Arizona League.
New faces
In addition to the outgoing players, the Sox also had two new names on the roster Wednesday.
Pitcher Andrew Carraway became the third member of the Mariners draft class of 2009 to join the team. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-hander from Marietta, Ga., was Seattle's 12th-round pick out of the University of Virginia. This spring as a senior he went 9-2 with a 3.96 ERA in 91 innings.
Corner infielder Blake Trinkler arrived after playing one game for Peoria. The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder from Ceres, Calif., was Seattle's 32nd-round pick in 2007. Last season he played for Pulaski, batting .206 in 42 games with two home runs and 14 RBI.
They joined pitchers Chris Kirkland and Taylor Stanton, third baseman Mario Martinez and outfielder Jose Rivero as players added since returning from Vancouver.
Sams out
Everett will be without its cleanup hitter for at least the next week.
Center fielder Kalian Sams, who has been Everett's best source of power, was placed on the seven-day disabled list because of a wrist injury. Sams suffered the injury on a missed swing during Everett's 4-3 victory over Spokane on Tuesday night.
Sams batted .375 with three home runs and six RBI in the Sox's first four games.
