NHL draft wrapup: Two Tips selected

Posted at 10:40 am by Nick Patterson

And that's that. Abney to Edmonton in the third round, Froese to Chicago in the fourth. No joy for Kellan Tochkin, Tyler Maxwell, Shane Harper and Thomas Heemskerk, but they still have a chance at NHL camp invitations.

It's pretty amazing thinking about who got drafted from Everett this year. Neither Abney nor Froese was taken in the bantam draft. I doubt most scouts had any clue who either was at the beginning of last season. But in less than a year they went from being nobodies to being NHL properties. I guess that just shows how quickly things can change at this level.

It was a bit light for the WHL this year as only 30 WHLers were selected. That's not dramatically down, but it is fewer than usual. Also, it was interesting to see that many of the seventh-round selections were re-entries. I guess NHL teams used the final round this year to rectify past oversights.
