Hiking Mount Pilchuck? Be cautious
Herald Staff
While another warm weekend sends hikers up Mount Pilchuck, officials urge people to be careful.
Rescue crews were called twice in less than a week when hikers on a simple day hike lost their way on the mountain, Snohomish County Sheriff's spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
Anyone planning to climb the 5,300-foot mountain needs to remember snow remains above the 4,200-foot level.
"Hikers who make it to the lookout at the top might find themselves getting lost on the way down because of the snow-covered trails," she said.
Remember to bring the 10 essentials even for a day hike, Hover said. If you get lost and you have a cell phone, call 911, not your friends or relatives. That will help dispatchers track you down and rescue crews will reach you faster, she said.
