AQUASOX UPDATE

Today's game

Opponent: Eugene Emeralds

When: 4:05 p.m.

Where: Civic Stadium

Radio: KRKO 1380 AM

Probable pitcher: Everett right-hander Chris Kirkland (0-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. TBA.

Back in the saddle again

There was a familiar rotund figure on the field hitting fungos before Saturday's Everett-Spokane game.

Former Cascade High School baseball coach Bob Smithson was in uniform as a guest of the team.

Not coincidentally Saturday's promotion was Grady Sizemore Bobblehead Night. The Cleveland Indians star is the most prominent product of Smithson's program. The AquaSox promo team -- The Frog Squad -- wore Cacade jerseys in recognition of the event.

Smithson said he will be seated in the first row behind the visitor's dugout when Cleveland plays Seattle at Safeco Field July 16-19.

Smithson, who has been retired since 2006, was recently among the first group inducted into the Everett Community College Hall of Fame.

"It was a very nice honor," he said. "It validated us full-figured guys."

But he's getting antsy in retirement. The former Everett School District and Oak Harbor athletic director would like to "get involved" again.

He'd like to do something for the AquaSox or even coach in high school again.

Frog facts

Everett's Hawkins Gebbers has hit safely in the Frogs' first seven games, batting .444 with one double, one home run and five RBI ... In their first four home games, the Frogs have scored 30 runs while hitting .309.
