Scholars Recognition honorees are: Stefanie Soelling (math), Kelly Bogart (technology) and Kassiopeia Smith (science) from Everett High School; Evonne Aguirre (math) and Ariella Shriver (science) from Sequoia High School; Kaitlin Kloes (math), Minhtam Nguyen (technology) and Sibani Das (science) from Cascade High School. The girls' names will also be submitted for recognition at the association's 2009 convention in St. Louis, Mo. Kindergarteners' graduation Amie Wahlburger and Phyllis Rice, Grace Academy's two kindergarten teachers, held a graduation ceremony for their students. The ceremony included a short play, a demonstration of the students reading and spelling abilities, recitation of a chapter memorized from the Bible, and singing. A reception for the students and their families was held after the ceremony. EvCC instructor wins state award Dongwa Hu, an Everett Community College economics instructor, has been named a winner of the 2009 Anna Sue McNeill Teaching, Learning and Assessment award by The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. The award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to teaching, student learning and assessment, and commitment to supporting and providing educational opportunities for all students. Hu, a native of Beijing, immigrated to the United States to advance her education. She studied world economic systems and received her master's degree in economics from Western Michigan University. Hu began her teaching career in New York in 1990 and has been teaching at two- and four-year schools for the past 18 years. Two earn degrees from Dartmouth Denny Goulet, a graduate of Kamiak High School and Boston College, and Sam Werthheimer, a graduate of Everett High and Stanford University, were granted master's degrees in public health in June at Dartmouth College in Hanover. N.H. The two are childhood friends. This summer, Werthheimer will be joining the Rand Corporation and Goulet will start medical school at the University of Washington. Stanwood student earns an MBA Lauren Amundson of Stanwood graduated from Bryant University with a master's in business administration. Bryant University, located in Smithfield, R.I., offers business, liberal arts and technology education. The university has more than 3,600 full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students. Oak Harbor students are Excelsior grads The following local students have graduated from Excelsior College: Henry X. Mioduski of Oak Harbor has earned an associate degree in science at Excelsior College, and Gary Gordon of Oak Harbor has earned a bachelor's of science degree. Excelsior College is an accredited, private nonprofit institution that focuses on the needs of working adults. It was founded in 1971 and is located in Albany, N.Y. Everett student gets accounting scholarship Sarah E. Ozanne of Everett has been awarded an accounting scholarship by the Washington CPA Foundation, the benevolent arm of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants. Ozanne, a Cascade High School alumnus, is attending Whitworth University in Spokane and plans to earn a bachelor's degree in accounting. She is involved with campus activities including membership in the Whitworth concert band and the bell choir. She has volunteered at several Spokane-area church congregations. Ozanne is also on the ASWU Club Council and has been named to the Whitworth Laureate Society (dean's list). She plans to earn her certified public accountant license after graduation.
