Sheriff's deputy injured in training accident in Yakima

A deputy with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office was shot in the leg Monday afternoon during training for the SWAT team in Yakima.

The deputy’s injuries were not life threatening, but he is being treated at a local hospital, said Rebecca Hover, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

The deputy's name was not released.

It appears the gunshot came from the deputy’s rifle, Hover aid. The shooting happened around 4 p.m. and appears accidental.

The deputy is in his early 30s. He has been with the sheriff's office for about five years and assigned to the SWAT team for about a year.

Police in Yakima will conduct an initial investigation, Hover said. The sheriff's office also will conduct an administrative review after the Yakima investigation is finished, she said.

The deputy is one of about 22 Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies in Yakima for SWAT-training exercises. The group arrived Saturday and is scheduled to return Tuesday.
