Reader poll: No more two-a-day football practices?

Every August, high school football teams around the country have two-a-day practices — a grueling tradition often dreaded by players but deemed necessary by coaches, who want to make use of every opportunity to prepare for the season.

But are two-a-day practices safe? The answer is no, according to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, which recommends that prep teams avoid two-a-days in August when hot temperatures and intense physical exertion can lead to heat stroke or death.

Check out this Associated Press article about the trainers’ suggestions. I found it on the ESPN Rise site.

What do you think? Obviously the heat isn’t nearly as bad here in August as in, say, Texas. But should two-a-day practices be banned everywhere? Or are they just an important part of preparation that should be carefully monitored?
