Final update on Evergreen Speedway track repair

The following email statement was received from Evergreen Speedway Tuesday afternoon.

On a related note, I received an email from Jason Christley at NASCAR that said Saturday's shortened late-model race will count as a NASCAR race for the purposes of meeting the requirements of first-time winner Natalie Sather's Drive for Diversity contract. He did reiterate that the points awarded, however, would not be applied to the NASCAR state or national championship.

Email from Evergreen Speedway promoter Danni Johnson:

On behalf of Evergreen Speedway we would like to apologize to all of our participants and fans alike, that last Saturday's events were incomplete. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the racing surface became unsafe for any continued use.

In the past few weeks we have spent thousands of dollars on track repairs and maintenance. It is very unfortunate that an area of the track that had not yet been repaired, began to fail. We began repairs on that portion of the track early Sunday morning. Those repairs will continue until the entire area is restored. Evergreen Speedway and Snohomish County do have plans for further future repairs. The current condition of the racing surface is a combination of decades of racing, overweight vehicle use, and a changing water table directly under the track with insufficient drainage. We have recently been on constant contact with many officials from Snohomish County and all seem to be in agreement with the circumstances.

We did offer discount tickets to all of the fans that were in the grandstands at the time race was cancelled. They were given 1/2 off admission to the next Late Model race, which will be on Saturday July 11th on the 5/8's.

Evergreen Speedway will be issuing standard track points for the Late Model race last Saturday. The finish is based on the last lap completed. Natalie Sather takes home her first win. All of the drivers that participated in last Saturday's event are being compensated. Although they will be receiving Evergreen Speedway points, they will not be receiving NASCAR points. In order for NASCAR to award any points, their operating guidelines do require that the race complete at least half of the scheduled laps. This will have virtually no effect on the participants of the event. These decisions were made based upon input from the drivers and crew, NASCAR and Evergreen Speedway staff. This took some time to make sure that all issues were properly addressed. Instead of hastily releasing information that could have changed, we wanted to ensure that all of the decisions made were appropriate.
