AquaSox beat Eugene 7-4

EUGENE, Ore. -- After back-to-back one-run losses in the first two games of a six-game trip to Eugene, the Everett AquaSox took no chances Tuesday. They led from start to finish in a 7-4 win in a Northwest League baaseball game at Civic Stadium.

Everett improved to 6-5 while stopping a three-game winning streak by the Emeralds (4-7).

Mario Martinez led the Frogs with two doubles in three at bats and three runs scored.

Brandon Pullen help nail down the victory with 12/3 innings of stellar relief pitching. He snuffed Eugene's last offensive threat in the seventh inning with a pickoff and a strikeout.

Daniel Cooper gave up a lone infield single in the ninth to record his first save.

AquaSox starter Taylor Lewis (3-0) retired nine of the first 11 batters (one walk, one hit batter) he faced before surrendering his first hit, a one-out single by Jason Hagerty in the fourth inning. Vincent Belnome followed with a second straight single and Nathan Freiman closed the gap to 4-3 with a three-run home run to left.

Those were all the runs allowed by Lewis, who yielded four hits over six innings.

The Frogs quickly got back two of the three runs. Jose Rivero led off the top of the fifth with a single to right-center and advanced to second when Martinez drew a base on balls. After Guy Welsh struck out, Juan Fuentes singled to drive in Rivero. Everett loaded the bases on a single by Welington Dotel, and Martinez scored on a groundout by Ryan Royster.

The AquaSox got the other one back in the seventh. Martinez led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Welsh and scored on a groundout by Fuentes.

Eugene touched up Everett reliever Bradley Reid for a run in the bottom of the seventh, and had runners at first and third with one out. But Pullen replaced Reid, picked off the runner at first and struck out Hagerty to get the Frogs out of the jam.

The AquaSox scored first for the 10th time in 11 games, tallying two runs in the top of the second inning. Fuentes lined a one-out single to right-center and scored on Dotel's home run to right. It was Dotel's second home run of the season.

Everett went ahead 3-0 when Ben Billingsley led off the third inning with a home run to right.

Later in the same inning, Martinez launched a double off the wall in center and scored when Eugene shortstop Christopher Tremblay committed a throwing error on an infield single by Welsh.
