New Mariner boys basketball coach Tom Jensen

The Mariner High School boys basketball team has a new head coach. His name is Tom Jensen. A story about Jensen’s hiring appeared in Tuesday’s Herald.

Since then, I got in touch with Mariner athletic director/assistant principal Scott Powers. Here’s what Powers said about Jensen, a former Mariner basketball player who was coached by Dexter Griffen. (Griffen resigned in April after 11 seasons.)

“The thing I’m excited about,” Powers said, “is Tom brings a lot of energy (and) a good solid basketball knowledge. But what really made him a standout candidate and hire, in this case, was the ability to just motivate kids. That was a big piece of it.”

Jensen was one of five applicants for the job, Powers said. A 1999 Mariner graduate, Jensen coached the Marauders’ junior-varsity team this past season and is familiar with all the players.

“It’s great to have someone there who knows the program,” said Powers.

Speaking of knowing a program, Tracey Bechtholdt was hired as Granite Falls High’s head football coach after being the Tigers’ defensive coordinator the last four years. Bechtholdt replaced Eric Dinwiddie, who now is a Lake Stevens assistant football coach.

Do you know of any other local head coaching changes? Send them to me at mcane@heraldnet.com. This is a perfect time for me to catch up on some of that stuff and let readers know who will be guiding their teams next school year.

By the way, to participate in the latest Double Team reader poll, click here. The question this time is: Should two-a-day high school football practices be eliminated because of safety concerns?
