New Border Patrol headquarters on hold in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES -- Plans for new U.S. Border Patrol headquarters in the Olympic Peninsula have been put on hold because of budget issues.

The U.S. General Services Administration -- the office in charge of buying, leasing and managing property for the federal government -- announced this week that it has not been able to find property in the Port Angeles area that meets its requirements or its budget.

The Peninsula Daily News reports the hold on new headquarters could impede further expansion of the Border Patrol in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

The agency has increased its number of agents from four to 24 in the last two years and stepped up its operations in the area. Currently, agents share a building and have limited space to hold people they arrest.
