NASCAR West driver Borneman racing coast-to-coast

Posted at 3:09 pm by Scott Whitmore

From NASCAR Camping World Series West:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 2, 2009) – Johnny Borneman has busy plans for his Fourth of July holiday this year – with travel, visiting the beach and a couple of stock car races.

The beach he is visiting is actually Daytona Beach, Fla., where Borneman will attempt to qualify for Friday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway. He then plans to fly from the East Coast to the West Coast to compete in a NASCAR Camping World Series West race on Saturday at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, Calif.

“It’s a little stressful,” Borneman said of qualifying for the Daytona event. “It’s a real tough show to make in Daytona. You really don’t know what you’ve got until qualifying is over.”

Borneman – a 32-year-old second-generation competitor from Ramona, Calif. who won the West series race at Evergreen Speedway in 2006 – is attempting to run a handful of events in the NASCAR Nationwide Series this season. After failing to qualify for the season opener at Daytona, his team made some changes to the car. A subsequent finish of 26th at Talladega gives Borneman some optimism about qualifying at Daytona this time around.

“I think we have a real good shot at making it,” Borneman said. “Chances are real good, but you really can’t breathe until qualifying is over with. Everybody steps up their game.”

Qualifying for the NASCAR Nationwide Series race is slated for 1:05 p.m. on Friday, with the race slated to begin at 8 p.m.

Borneman is slated to board a flight on Saturday morning with a scheduled arrival time of 11 a.m. in San Diego. >From there he will make the two-hour drive to Irwindale to compete in the NASCAR Camping World Series West event. Knowing he may miss both practice sessions, which conclude at 1:45 p.m., Borneman has asked a friend, Super Late Model driver John Manke, to drive his car in practice.

“I’m going to have him practice the car at Irwindale,” Borneman said. “We should be there in time for qualifying.”

Borneman is a three-time winner in the NASCAR Camping World Series West, where he has competed on a regular basis since 2000. With the added challenge of racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series this season, he opted to cut back his racing schedule on the West Coast this year and just focus on select events. The King Taco 200 at Toyota Speedway on Saturday is one of those races. In 14 starts at the half-mile track, Borneman has five top-five and eight top-10 finishes, with a runner-up finish in 2001.
