Seems Like Yesterday

50 YEARS AGO (1959)

Jasper Rucker today announced the construction of a new Safeway store at the northwest corner of Everett and Colby avenues. Demolition also began today on the Shopland Super Store that occupied the site.

A compliment of 18 cars were delivered to the Washington State Patrol office in Seattle by Walsh Platt Motors. All Plymouths, they were powered by Golden Commando engines.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)

Under the leadership and direction of new director Karen Charnell, the Chamber of Commerce and the city were trying to change Everett's "Milltown-City of Smokestacks" image to one of a "City of Festivals." Successful current mini-events were Salty Sea Days and the Fourth of July celebrations.

Snohomish County's new Visitor Information Center on 164th Street SW was off and running in the race to attract tourist dollars. Since the directional signs went up on I-5 two weeks ago, more than 1,000 people had stopped at the center seeking information about the Puget Sound area.
