Crews rushed to the rural area southeast of Snohomish just after 6 p.m., Snohomish Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Mike Gatterman said. The fire started lower on the hill and began spreading upward fast. "The fire burned up the hill pretty quickly," he said. More than two dozen firefighters were called to help knock down the fire before flames reached nearby homes. Crews from the state Department of Natural Resources were cutting old, rotten trees to make sure they don't fall and hurt anyone, Gatterman said. A few firefighters were expected to stay in the area overnight. In Lake Stevens, fireworks started a half-acre brush fire in a field in the Frontier Circle area around noon, Lake Stevens Fire Department Battalion Chief Travis Hots said. The fire scorched its way to the back yards of several homes, but firefighters were able to control the flames before they spread. No homes were damaged. "We had to use a four-wheel-drive brush truck to get into an area inaccessible by a fire engine," Hots said. About the same time, a lawn mower sparked a small brush fire in the Machias area, Hots said. No one was hurt. READER COMMENTS Be the first to comment.
