HOMELESSNESS

Kids bring face to hidden problem

Thanks for the comprehensive article on homeless school children (June 28, "1,670 local students in county are without homes"), and more, for putting it on the front page.

Often when I try to describe the extent of the problem of homelessness, people think that it ought be fully visible, and that were there truly as many homeless as the numbers suggest, we'd see far more folks outside.

Homeless is mostly hidden, save among those who work to end homelessness and those who work to help those who suffer homelessness. It is not enough to leave ending homelessness to folks who give direct help and/or to folks who advocate that homelessness end.

Without everyone becoming informed, there will be the urge to cut human services funding just when it is most needed. This is that day of greatest need, when wisdom needs to lead those who govern to find remedies and to lead those who vote to demand remedies. It is not a time for initiatives that cut taxes. I encourage The Herald to continue contributions toward educating readers, such as this article by Kaitlin Manry.
