Where do we go?

Is the pope Catholic? The state Department of Natural Resources, in an effort to save money, is hauling away garbage cans and portable toilets at some back-country campgrounds and trail heads (Page B2).

So hikers and campers wondering where to go when nature calls may have to take their lead from the age-old rhetorical question: Does a bear (bleep) in the woods?

And they're off: Mukilteo city officials are wondering how to encourage speeding drivers leaving the ferry to slow down on the too-aptly-named Mukilteo Speedway. Among the traffic-calming measures proposed are increased police patrols, a radar reader board and street improvements (above).

The city might also consider the traffic- calming abilities of a string of espresso stands with bikini baristas.

Kids those days: Seems Like Yesterday reports that 50 years ago today a thief broke into the West Dependable Grocery on Hewitt Avenue and stole 12 cans of beer (Page A2).

Somewhere, there's a 69-year-old man who flashes a guilty smile each time he pops the lid on a can of Miller Lite.
