Seton Hall is a Catholic university near New York City. Monroe resident Ian Barnes, a member of the class of 2009, has been named to the dean's list for spring semester at Connecticut College. Dean's honors are given to students who have earned a grade point average 3.3 or higher at the school in New London, Conn. Four local students have graduated from Excelsior College, a New York-based college that offers several ways to earn a degree, including online classes and proficiency exams, as well as transfer credits from other universities. Those graduates are Lake Stevens resident Tanya Huneycutt with a bachelor of science; Freeland resident Jeremy Wandrei, an associate's degree in applied science for technical studies; Marysville resident Todd Kowalczyk, a bachelor of science in technology; and Raymond Williams of Snohomish with a bachelor of science in technology. Granite Falls district honors employees The Granite Falls School District named Tracy Land and Viki Perrault as 2008-2009 employees of the year at its annual end-of-the-year staff awards program June 16. Land is a fifth-grade teacher at Mountain Way Elementary and has been employed with the district for 10 years. Her work in several subjects, particularly math, has helped many teachers to better their understanding. She was recognized for continually seeking ways to improve student achievement. Perrault, a food service employee, has worked for the district for 18 years. She was recognized for being sensitive to the needs of students and knowing the name of every child she encounters during her work day. Perrault is president of the Public School Employees classified union membership. 10 fire academy recruits certified Ten Everett Community College Fire Academy recruits earned Firefighter 1 and Hazardous Materials Operations certification after completing 15 weeks of training. "The training has been intense, but the recruits have proven themselves worthy of the name firefighter," said Emergency Services program director Russell Colmore. Graduates include: Tyler Ackley, Bryan Clemens, Andrew Dennis, Jenna Gracey, Sean McDonald, Brian Merkley, Nicholas Perez, Anthony Roepke, Matt Rommel and Michael Schroeder. The drillmaster for the group was Dave Neyens, a retired battalion chief with the Everett Fire Department. EvCC's fire science degree program runs two Firefighter 1 academies each year in the fall and spring. Classes for both academies next year will meet at night. The next academy begins August 31. The academy meets the standards for Washington State Patrol Firefighter 1 and Haz-Mat Operations certification. Recruits receive training and certification at the Washington State Fire Academy for live fire training. Students can earn a 90-credit associate's degree in technical arts in fire science. Students must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or GED, valid photo ID complete an application and respiratory questionnaire, and attend mandatory orientation. The student award was named in honor of Gillies to recognize his commitment to education and student activities. The award's criteria includes scholarship, citizenship and participation in school activities. Gillies, who died in 2004, was an inspirational teacher, coach and principal in area schools for many years. He moved on to become executive director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and then president of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
