Forest fire breaks out in Monroe

MONROE – Fire crews were struggling to knock down a forest fire burning southeast of Monroe.
The fire was burning on state-owned land full of standing trees off Rimrock Road.
About a dozen firefighters hiked up to the smoldering ground and were using chainsaws and shovels to clear the area around the fire. Grayish-black smoke was rising from the ground.
Fire crews first were called about 11 a.m., Department of Natural Resources spokesman David Roberts said. The fire measured 1.5 acres earlier this afternoon.
The fire was burning logging slash and young trees on a 2-square-mile piece of land that is managed by the state, he said.
Heavy brush made access difficult for firefighters, Roberts said. Crews have been using a helicopter to dump buckets of water over the fire.
