From the "Why? Well, why not?" department, the Mariners have signed veteran shortstop Alex Cintron to a minor league contract.
Cintron is trying to revive his career after a terrible start that led the Nationals to give up on him. He went 2-for-26 before they designated him for assignment on May 20.
Cintron, 30, batted .286 in 133 at-bats last year with the Orioles. His best season was 2003, when he batted .317 with 13 home runs.
