Camano park plans shape up
Freedom Park supporters will serve free picnic grub and information on Saturday.
CAMANO ISLAND -- They plan to break bread Saturday where they hope to break ground next spring.
Organizers of the community playground project at Freedom Park plan to serve a free barbecue picnic during an informational meeting from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Terry's Corner on Camano Island.
"The kids have told us what they want, and now it's time for the adults to step up to make it a reality," project coordinator Greg Gilday said. "We can't give the kids the anti-gravity chamber that somebody requested, but I think we'll be able to incorporate most of their ideas."
Designers of the large playground recently learned what Stanwood-Camano school children hope to see in a new community playground. Hundreds of students from Cedarhome, Elger Bay and Stanwood elementary schools submitted ideas for the park, and they'll participate in a contest to name the playground, too, Gilday said.
Replicas of a Viking ship and a farm tractor will be incorporated into the playground to pay homage to the area's history, he said.
More than 750 volunteers are expected to be needed May 19 through 23 to build the playground, Gilday said.
"It's going up like a barn-raising event," he said.
People can sign up at Saturday's barbecue to provide child care, cook meals or swing a hammer.
The playground is being funded through donations of time, materials and cash from members of the Stanwood and Camano Island community.
"Volunteers and donations are what will make this dream project come true," Gilday said.
