PICK OF THE WEEK: Ilwaco salmon
With about a jillion coho expected to enter the Columbia this summer, charter fishing out of Ilwaco should be hot and hotter clear into September. And if youve never explored the Ilwaco/Long Beach area, this interesting corner of the state is worth a trip for sightseeing alone.
Silvers going to 8 pounds are the current target of the charter fleet, with a scattering of chinook to the high 20s, and good bottomfishing for black rockfish and lingcod. Add to this a shot at albacore, starting next week, and the fact that the state just extended a very good lower-Columbia sturgeon season through this weekend, and fishing opportunities in southwest Washington abound.
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel checked 3,066 anglers at the Port of Ilwaco last week, with 154 chinook and 5,451 coho, for nearly limits around.
Google Ilwaco fishing for a list of charters, or try Pacific Salmon Charters at 1-800-831-2695. Co-owner Sarah Gudgell said they charge $95 per person per day for salmon and sturgeon trips, or $160 for the popular salmon/bottomfish combo trips, all plus tax. Those are the same prices as last year, Gudgell said, and the only additional cost would be $9.50 for a one-day license, available at the charter office.
