AQUASOX NOTES: Royster maturing
Last season, AquaSox left fielder Ryan Royster batted .196 with two home runs and 18 RBI in 57 games for Everett.
Through Sunday, Royster is batting .315 with five home runs and a team-leading 25 RBI in 33 games. Roysters progression and .411 on-base percentage in the lead off slot has helped the AquaSox become one of the Northwest Leagues best hitting teams.
We put him in the leadoff spot (this season) and hes getting more pitches to hit, AquaSox manager John Tamargo said. When he puts a good swing on the ball, hes got some power ... hes a good all around player for us.
Tamargo also noted that Royster has improved defensively in the field with a number of outfield assists and running grabs.
Trouble with Dust Devils
Following Sundays contest, Everett holds a 3-6 record against its rival from southeastern Washington. The Dust Devils are the only Northwest League team to have a winning record against the AquaSox.
Busting their slumps
Center fielder Matt Cerione was batting 1-for-19 in an AquaSox uniform and shortstop Anthony Phillips was mired in a 3-for-28 slump entering Sundays game, but the two got off the slide with respectable performances.
Phillips batted 3-for-5 with a solo home run and Cerione batted 1-for-4 with a two-run shot against the Dust Devils.
Hes (Cerione) new, he just started with a wood bat, Tamargo said. Phillips, hes been swinging pretty good from the left side. ... With Cerione we just gotta let him play.
Thats all Im trying to do, get better with each at bat, Cerione said.
