Track and field athletes headed to nationals
Two members of the Snohomish Track Club -- Amy-Eloise Neale and Stephanie Cummings -- are headed to the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics.
Neale qualified in the Youth Girls division (ages 13-14) in both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs. She placed second in both races at the regionals, in each case finishing less than a second behind the winner.
In the 3,000, the winner finished in 10 minutes, 35.05 seconds, with Neale coming in at 10:35.06. It "was a dead heat that took the officials 15 minutes to figure out," Fran Dauncey of the Snohomish club wrote in an e-mail.
Cummings qualified in the 400 in the Young Womens Division (ages 17-18), finishing third at the regionals in a time of 59.09.
The national meet begins today in Greensboro, N.C.
Meanwhile, Anthony Hutchinson of Everett qualified for the Hershey National Track and Field Meet in the standing long jump with his performance at the state meet held June 27 at North Thurston High School in Lacey.
