Seaplane base in Oak Harbor now a museum

The old seaplane base at 315 W. Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor has a new purpose these days as a museum built there to honor local aviation history with displays from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf War.

Aircraft components, log books and navigational instruments are on display. Visitors can even try out a flight simulator. Tours of Ault Field, the active land plane base, are available with advance arrangement.

The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays year-round, and tours are available on those days. Tours can be scheduled for other hours, depending on docents’ availability.

Admission is by donation. Call 360-675-1718 or 360-675-1102 for more information or go to www.pbyma.org. You can leave a message with tour requests at 360-240-9500.
