KENT, Wash -- A night of jubilation for the Mopar Drag Team! In the last CCCA race of the season for Pacific Raceways on Friday night, Dave Kranz of Monroe, WA took home the winner’s trophy Friday night, while team member Steve Neel won the individual racers points title.
The weather was perfect for drag racing, cool and no wind. The night began with the individual racers points title on the line. Steve Neel of Marysville, WA was trying to keep his points lead. With several racers within striking distance, Neel, of the Mopar Drag Team, had his work cut out for him. Knowing that one bad light, or slight breakout could snatch victory from him.
An import running test-n-tune, broke and oiled down the left lane. Unfortunately this caused several racers that were in the points hunt trying to catch Neel, to lose traction around the 1000 ft mark. After three 10 second cars got squirrely, the track sent the clean-up crew back out to re-clean the suspect area. For the racers in contention for the points, the damage was already done. The slippery track caused each one of them to lose their race. Neel, known for his good sportsmanship, said “ I hate to win the points championship this way”. Every drag racers knows, that over the entire season, you get some breaks, and some go against you.
Making it to the semi-finals was N.W. F-Body racer Jonathan Miller in his 2000 Firebird defeating Casey Reed of the Mopar Drag Team in his ’72 Dodge Dart. Dave Kranz took his ’72 Plymouth Scamp to victory over Ford Drag Team racer Kyle Larimore. Larimore ran an 11.79 on an 11.79 dial-in but Kranz had a much better reaction time and got to the finish line first.
In the finals, Kranz broke-out with a 12.49 on a 12.50 dial, unaware he had already won the race, due to Miller red lighting.
