The MRI results have come back on ailing first baseman Russell Branyan, and it's not good.
Branyan has a herniated disc in his back and was placed on the 15-day disabled list. The M's called up right-handed pitcher Chris Jakubauskas, who they're trying to get back to Safeco Field before tonight's game is over. Jakubauskas pitched one scoreless inning last night for the Class AAA Tacoma Rainiers at Portland.
Branyan left Friday night's game after his second at-bat because of back pain. An MRI today revealed the herniated disc.
No word on whether this will end Branyan's season. If it does, he'll have set career highs with 116 games, 31 home runs, 76 RBI, 21 doubles and 58 walks. He leads the Mariners in home runs and walks.
Jakubauskas was optioned last week to Tacoma after he'd developed a very slight shoulder problem and the team, thin in the bullpen, called up Randy Messenger. Jakubauskas pitched an inning of relief last night at Portland and was scheduled to pitch again today, then b ecome one of the September callups.
