Memorial, vigil a year after Skagit shootings

MOUNT VERNON — On the one-year anniversary of a shooting rampage that claimed six lives and wounded four other people, Skagit County sheriff’s officers unveiled a granite memorial Wednesday that honors one of the dead — Deputy Anne Jackson.

Sheriff Rick Grimstead says he doesn’t think the feelings of sadness and remorse over losing an officer ever leave an organization.

Also killed were Julie Binschus, Chet Rose, Leroy Lange, David Radcliffe and Greg Gillum.

At a candlelight vigil in the small community of Alger, several dozen relatives and community members gathered to remember the victims as a bell tolled for each. The shootings began in Alger.

A judge has ruled that Isaac Zamora is mentally competent to stand trial in the Sept. 2, 2008, shooting spree. Zamora has entered not guilty pleas to 20 felony counts, including six aggravated murder charges.

The sheriff’s office memorial stone also honors Deputy Al Hultgren, killed in 1981 when his patrol car was struck by a drunken driver as Hultgren responded to an accident scene.
