Jaguars cut former starts Pashos and Williams
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Jaguars have cut right tackle Tony Pashos and cornerback Brian Williams, both former starters, to make room for a pair of rookies.
Both players signed lucrative free-agent contracts in recent years.
Pashos started 31 games the last two years, but he struggled last season and the Jaguars drafted offensive tackles Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton with their top two picks.
Pashos moved to guard in Thursday nights preseason finale and played well, but Jacksonville asked him to play for less money and he refused, his agent said Saturday.
Williams started 45 games the last three years, but was behind rookie Derek Cox this fall and too expensive to keep as a nickel back.
Long snapper Joe Zelenka, who had been with the team longer than any other player, also was cut. Coaches told Zelenka he would be let go before the final preseason game, allowing him to say his goodbyes to fans and teammates.
Tight end Richard Angulo, safety Marlon McCree, running backs Alvin Pearman and Chauncey Washington, linebackers Tim Shaw and Thomas Williams, and punter Steve Weatherford also were cut.
The team waived seventh-round draft pick Tiquan Underwood, one of three receivers drafted, and 10 other first-year players. Quarterback Todd Boeckman, fullback Brock Bolen, safety Michael Desormeaux, cornerback Pete Ittersagen, defensive end Jeremy Navarre, center Cecil Newton, receiver Todd Peterson, guard Cameron Stephenson, running back Josh Vaughan and linebacker Johnny Williams failed to make the 53-man roster.
Also Saturday, the Jaguars placed defensive lineman Rob Meier on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.
Two undrafted rookies, linebacker Russell Allen and defensive end Julius Williams, made the squad.
