Seahawks cut Russell, sign ex-Husky Milloy
By John Boyle Herald Writer
The Seahawks parted ways with veteran safety Brian Russell today, and have added safety Lawyer Milloy, a Tacoma native who played at the University of Washington, according to NFL.com and Foxsports.com reports.
Milloy, 35, was a four-time Pro Bowler with the New England, winning one Super Bowl with the Patriots. He has also played in Buffalo and most recently Atlanta.
On his Twitter page, Milloy wrote, "It's official.... I'm a Seahawk! Let's Go!!!"
Milloy will likely compete with Jordan Babineaux for the staring free safety job.
Russell, who has started every game in his two years with the Seahawks, was one of 23 Seahawks released on the day NFL teams have to cut rosters down to 53 players.
Cornerback Marcus Trufant will start the season on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he cannot play before the seventh game of the season.
The players released were: S Jamar Adams, DE Baraka Atkins, K Brandon Coutu, G Brian De La Puente, CB Marquis Floyd, T Na'Shan Goddard, S Courtney Greene, WR Mike Hass, CB Kevin Hobbs, FB David Kirtman, RB Devin Moore, CB Nate Ness, TE Joe Newton, WR Logan Payne, LB Dave Philistin, T Andre Ramsey, T William Robinson,, QB Jeff Rowe, WR Courtney Taylor, WR Jordan Kent, LB D.D. Lewis, S Brian Russell, and G Cory Withrow.
Other than Russell, Lewis is perhaps the biggest surprise on that list. He has been with the Seahawks since 2002 and started 20 games in his Seattle career.
In the notable position battles, Ben Obomanu was kept as the fifth receiver, and Olindo Mare won the kicking job over Coutu. The Seahawks kept 11 defensive linemen, clearing the way for rookies Nick Reed, Michael Bennett and Derek Walker to all make the team.
