VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Vancouver Canadians pulled away late to take a 6-4 Northwest League win over the Everett AquaSox in the final game of the 2009 season in front of 2,819 fans at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Catcher Brandon Bantz and second baseman Kevin Mailloux tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning with back-to-back run-scoring doubles for Everett (39-37), but Vancouver (36-40) reclaimed the lead with runs in the sixth and seventh innings off reliever Brandon Pullen (3-3).
Everett kept Vancouver off the board in the eighth inning when the Canadians’ Myrio Richard grounded into a triple play.
The AquaSox had a runner in scoring position with one out in the ninth, but failed to score.
Bantz finished the game batting 2-for-4 with two RBI and Mailloux batted 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Also for Everett, first baseman Blake Trinkler batted 2-for-3 with an RBI-single in the fifth inning.
Once in a battle with Salem-Keizer for first place in the Northwest League’s West Division, Everett faded down the stretch and finished 10 games behind the Volcanoes for the division title.
Vancouver was led by Ryan Ortiz, who batted 2-for-4 and hit the go-ahead RBI double in the sixth inning. The Canadians saw five players record an RBI in the game.
