Girls soccer preview: 5 players to watch

Julia Fjortoft
Sr. | Meadowdale | F

The senior forward played a big role in Meadowdale's terrific regular season last year.

Meadowdale head coach Chris Baldwin, entering his second year with the team, said Fjortoft scored 22 goals last season, while maintaining a strong academic performance and acting as “a natural leader.”

“She's a gifted, talented athlete, a go-to scorer for us,” Baldwin said. “We're going to work this year on using her in other ways, (including) as a distraction (when) other teams try to double team her.”

A strong season from Fjortoft could help Meadowdale as it looks to improve on its disappointing elimination at districts.

Kaleen Berg
Sr. | Lake Stevens | MF

The senior midfielder is coming off a career year with Lake Stevens.

“She's a great goal scorer … Always seems to be in the right place at the right time,” said Lake Stevens head coach Andy Knutson, who estimated Berg had about 17 goals last year. “… She has an uncanny ability when the balls in front of her foot to put it in the net.”

Berg will team with Sandra Osborn (committed to St. Johns) and Annie Thomas (committed to Seattle Pacific) as the Vikings gear up for another season after tying 3A Everett last year for best record in the Wesco North.

Lindsey Bos
Sr. | Archbishop Murphy | MF

A four-year varsity starter and a 2009 co-captain as well as a member of the Crossfire Premier select team, Bos has verbally committed to play for the University of Washington next year.

“People think of her as an offensive player, but she's a total player,” Archbishop Murphy head coach Dick Henderson said of the center-midfielder. “… She's able to defend at midfield (as well as score) … She makes players around her better.”

Last year Bos had eight goals and 15 assists, and the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats placed third at state.

Annie Sittauer
Sr. | Everett | F

The Everett forward and Crossfire Premier select player has verbally committed to play for the University of Washington next year.

“She's strong with the ball, (physical), has good speed, surprises people,” Everett head coach Kosta Pitharoulis said. “… She's very competitive, she wants to be the best.”

Pitharoulis said Sittauer also commands defenders, getting other players like Sele Vance more shots. Sittauer missed the first half of the regular season last year recovering from an injury, but Everett should have her from the get-go as it tries to defend its 3A state title.

Megan Bolmes
Sr. | Jackson | MF

A four year varsity player, Bolmes had 10 goals and nine assists in 20 games last year for Jackson (fourth place at 4A state).

“She's the team engine — a lot of the offense is generated through her,“ Jackson head coach Michael Bartley said of Bolmes, an attacking center-midfielder, who was a team captain last year. “… When it came to crunch time, she had the vital goals.”

Bartley said Bolmes has succeeded while carrying the target on her back that comes with being a well-known player.
