Local ceremonies are planned to mark attacks of Sept. 11

People around Snohomish County and Camano Island are planning several events to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City.

Firefighters in north Snohomish County and Camano Island plan to gather for a Patriot Day Memorial at 11 a.m. Friday at the Stanwood Fire Station, 8117 267th St. NW.

Those who lost their lives in 2001 will be remembered with presentations by the Snohomish County Pipes and Drums ensemble, Fire Chief Mike Ganz and the Stanwood-Camano Fire Department Honor Guard. Cake and coffee are to be served after the ceremony.

The newly formed honor guard has a mission to honor country, community and the profession of firefighting through traditions such as the memorial, Assistant Fire Chief Levon Yengoyan said.

The honor guard is made up of 11 career, part-time and volunteer firefighters who give their time to train for community ceremonies. For more information about the Stanwood Camano Honor Guard, call Will King at 360-629-2184.

Snohomish County Fire District 1 plans to honor the sacrifices made Sept. 11, 2001, by fellow firefighters and emergency service workers with a brief ceremony on Friday morning.

At 6:55 a.m., firefighters plan to gather at the flag pole at each of the Fire District 1 fire stations to observe a moment of silence at 6:58 a.m. At 6:59 a.m., dispatchers will broadcast a memorial announcement.

The ceremony will honor the 343 firefighters who perished at the World Trade Center as well as others who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Fire District 1 station locations: Hilltop Fire Station, 20510 Damson Road, Lynnwood; Hilton Lake Fire Station, 3525 108th St. SE, Everett; Lake Serene Fire Station, 4323 Serene Way, Lynnwood; Mariner Fire Station, 12310 Meridian Ave., Everett; Martha Lake Fire Station, 16819 13th Ave. W., Lynnwood; Mountlake Terrace Fire Station 18, 3900 228th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace; Mountlake Terrace Fire Station 19, 5902 232nd St. SW, Mountlake Terrace; Silver Firs Fire Station, 13611 Puget Park Drive, Everett.

The Stanwood-Camano Ministerial Association plans to conduct a 24-hour prayer vigil for peace beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday in the yurt at Josephine Sunset Home, 9901 272nd Place NW, Stanwood.

Last year a similar vigil attracted more than 200 participants from 11 congregations.

To sign up to participate for an hour or more, call Josephine Sunset Home chaplain Phil Lewis at 360-941-6314.

Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff on Friday for national Patriot Day, the annual memorial to the victims of the 2001 tragedy.

Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Friday. Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition.
