New Navy ship to arrive today
EVERETT — The first of three visiting U.S. Navy support ships is scheduled to arrive at Everett’s waterfront beginning today.
The USNS Shasta should arrive at Naval Station Everett sometime around noon.
Two other ships, the USNS Kiska and USNS Carl Brashear, are on their way to Everett and should arrive sometime next week, spokeswoman Kristin Ching said.
The ships are part of Military Sealift Command’s Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force. The Shasta, Kiska and Brashear provide logistical support to Navy ships deployed across the Eastern Pacific from the West Coast to the International Dateline.
These ships with their deep hulls move military cargo and supplies to U.S. forces. The Brashear, named for the Navy’s first African American deep-sea diver, belongs to the Navy’s newest class of combat logistical ships. It can deliver ammunition, provisions, stores, spare parts, water and petroleum products.
A combination of civil service mariners and U.S. Navy sailors make up the crew of all three ships.
Officials plan to keep the three ships in Everett for about a month.
