Herald writers honored with Blethens
SEATTLE — The Herald took two first-place and two second-place honors in the 2009 C.B. Blethen Memorial Awards for distinguished newspaper reporting.
Features reporter Sarah Jackson's story on potential health hazards of plastic baby bottles took first-place honors in the special Debby Lowman Award for distinguished reporting of consumer affairs, which honors a Seattle Times consumer reporter who died of cancer in 1978.
Investigative reporter Scott North took first-place features writing honors for his series, “A Truth Beyond,” which reported the 2002 death of Mylo Harvey after a struggle with Everett police and what that tragedy can teach about family, loss and the ability to endure.
North and education reporter Eric Stevick won second-place honors in investigative reporting for their work that revealed the costs and other details of Everett School District's investigation of a teacher that involved the use of secretly videotaping her classroom.
The entire Herald staff also won a second-place award for breaking news coverage of last autumn's floods.
The annual awards were established in 1977 in honor of Blethen, publisher of The Seattle Times from 1915 to 1941. The awards were presented Thursday at the annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association in Seattle.
The first- and second-place winners in each category receive plaques and cash awards donated by The Seattle Times.
