Olympic swimmer has stolen medals returned 25 years later

MELBOURNE, Australia — Olympic swimming champion John Konrads has had his 1960 gold medal returned 25 years after it was stolen from his home.

Konrads was tipped off by an American collector who bought a collection of medals, including the Olympic 1,500-meters gold medal, on an Internet auction site and wanted to know why they were being sold, the Australian Associated Press reported Tuesday.

It was among 16 medals stolen from Konrads’ Melbourne home in 1984. He contacted Victoria state police, who intercepted the medals before they were shipped to America and returned them to Konrads last week.

No other details were released.

Detective Senior Constable Nick Uebergang said Konrads was thrilled to have the medals back.

“He believed he was never going to see (the medals) again,” Uebergang told AAP.

As well as winning the 1,500 at the Rome Olympics, Konrads picked up bronze medals in the 400 freestyle and the 800 relay. He set 26 individual world records during his career.
