Five Everett bikini baristas charged with prostitution

Undercover investigators say the Grab-n-Go Espresso employees engaged in illegal conduct.

EVERETT — Five baristas are accused of engaging in prostitution at an Everett bikini espresso stand following a two-month undercover police investigation into complaints that the women were selling more than coffee.

Detectives say the women were charging up to $80 to strip down and flash customers while fixing lattes and mochas.

Investigators saw the women expose their crotches, lick whipped cream off their co-workers' private parts and pose naked for pictures inside the Grab-n-Go Espresso stand at 8015 Broadway, according to police reports obtained by The Herald on Wednesday.

Detectives also witnessed some of the women charging customers to touch their bare breasts and naked buttocks. Touching of that kind, for pay, falls under the city's definition of prostitution.

The women, ages 18 to 24, were charged Wednesday with multiple counts of prostitution and violating the city's adult entertainment ordinance, both misdemeanors, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.

No arrests have been made. The women are expected to be arraigned in Everett Municipal Court in a few weeks.

Bill Wheeler, the owner of the stands, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

The investigation began in mid-July after police heard a stream of complaints about baristas baring too much.

Everett police during the past year had received more than 40 complaints about various bikini coffee stands around the Everett area. Many of the complaints focused on women who were exposing their breasts, genitals or buttocks, according to police reports.

The department decided to investigate Grab-n-Go Espresso — the business generating the most complaints, Goetz said.

Some of the complaints alleged that some baristas at the Everett coffee hut and three other Grab-n-Go Espresso stands in unincorporated Snohomish County were engaging in prostitution, an Everett police detective wrote in his reports.

Sheriff's deputies also have received complaints about the Grab-n-Go Espresso south of Silver Lake. Employees of nearby businesses have complained that the stand is a haven for lewd behavior. None of those complaints have resulted in any criminal charges, sheriff's spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

Everett police focused their investigation on the stand within the city limits, Goetz said.

“This was about alleged conduct, not about what the women were wearing,” he said. “They could have been wearing parkas and if they continued to conduct themselves that way, we still would have filed the criminal charges.”

Undercover detectives began posing as customers in mid-July.

An Everett detective took a city prosecutor to the stand to witness firsthand the activities of the baristas. During that visit, two women allegedly engaged in a “whipped cream show” in which they sprayed whipped cream on each other and licked it off.

On a second visit, a detective was told he couldn't have a mocha because the stand was out of chocolate. He also was told he couldn't order a small drink because they only served 20-ounce beverages.

The barista told him that for $20, she and the other barista would give him a show. He paid and they bared their breasts and pulled down their undergarments, police reports said.

The detective noted that the stand is about 30 yards off the roadway and about 10 feet lower than the level of the road, making it easy to see into the business from the street. During the undercover operation, traffic was regularly stopped in front of the stand because of nearby construction, according to investigators.

Detectives say the women also charged customers to play “basketball” — a game in which customers were allowed to throw waded up money at the women, who caught the money in their underpants.

Investigators also witnessed women strip down and perch on the drive-thru window ledge in full view of passing cars. The five women also allowed customers, who paid extra, to grab their breasts and buttocks, police allege.

“We understand why citizens in our community are extremely upset about the conduct, and based on what our detectives found in their investigation, it's pretty clear to see why,” Goetz said.

Everett police have closed their investigation into the stand. They will continue to investigate any new complaints about prostitution at espresso stands or any location in the city, Goetz said.

Meanwhile, the City Council is expected to decide next week whether to change the city's lewd conduct ordinance to include espresso stands.

The proposed change, which was part of a regular review of city codes, would not prevent baristas from wearing bikinis, city spokeswoman Kate Reardon said. It also still would be legal for women to wear pasties and sheer undergarments as long as their nipples and areolas are covered.

Police say their investigation was prompted by people's complaints and separate from any review of city ordinances being considered by city lawmakers.

“We were going forward with our investigation no matter what was going on with the council,” Goetz said.

What is prostitution?
Isn't prostitution charging money for sex. This article talks about the women being paid to flash or strip. Is that prostitution? If it is, if there was a charity event where men auctioned themselves to the highest bidder and the money goes to charity, and then men went on a date with the women who won the bid and they kissed, would that be illegal? Would a kissing booth where men paid to kiss women be illegal? Would paying to enter a competition of winning a date with a celebrity be illegal?

Anyone got a link to the Prostitution law these women baristas and being charged under? I'd like to read it to see what the penalties are.

The article says the Police went undercover to purchase some of theses services, so shouldn't the undercover cops be charged with using a prostitute? Coz they could have took a hidden camera and watched a member of the public pay the baristas, instead of the cops doing it themselves.

Why Not??
I see nothing wrong with what the women did. We have way too many laws legislating morality and forcing others morals and mores on us. Consenting adults should be able to anything they wish, when they wish, and with whom they wish. Far to many uptight puritans with their spinters all clinched tight out there who probably cannot get a woman trying to force the rest of us to forced morality. The women should have been left alone. IF those who are offended do not like what they were doing, then go elsewhere and leave those of us who wish to participate in our hedonistic fun alone.

High an mighty women
If you are going to speak(write) badly of the young women that work there, please tell your husbands/boyfriends/significant other to stop coming by and giving us their money so freely while you whine about not having enough food in the house. BTW - you don't need the extra food

Wow, Ender
I'm so very glad we have people like you to tell us what is moral and what isn't. How else would we ever know?

That said, this behavior obviously occured in an area where others could easily see what was happening and in some cases (being stuck in traffic) may not have been able to help seeing it. To me, that's the line. Ticket the women and anyone seen purchasing the 'show', small fine, strike it from the record in a couple of years (hopefully), be on your way. And keep it private.

Shame on Everette
What a pathetic town full of pathetic people persecuting girls for being girls. Your police are basically telling you people that they are over staffed and wasting your money on nonsense. Fire these scoundrels and move on. Live and let live. Nobody is being harmed in these coffee stands. If a girl gets burned, then you've got a concern, however minor. Currently the only concern is how your money is being wasted by your civil servants.

Wake up and smell the java.

Prostitution
If you want to see real life prostitution going on in broad daylight just go spend twenty minutes in the Home Depot parking lot at 99 & 128th. There have been literally hundreds of reports and there are still crack heads out there working that lot. This isn't about prostitution it's about tax revenue. The city, the state, and the arresting officers should be ashamed of themselves for what they are doing to these women.

Are you kidding me joe? Or did we just find out your gig is up? This is the exact kind of behavior all of us "prudes" were worried about...just how far were these women willing to go to make a buck. I think it's sickening that women have ended up exploited, once again, for the sole purpose of generating money. Please, don't bother trying to explain away how you think it's just fine that you pull up to the local espresso stand to teach your boy how to be a man, he's not the kind of man I would want my daughters to know in the first place!

Charged with prostitution?
What I will say is that the city seems to be treating these young women like criminals, treating them like bad people. They didn't even sell sexual intercourse, just sexual behavior! Now they're being punished, being called prostitutes? This is why even though I don't support prostitution, I think it should be decriminalized. Young women forced into prostitution need help and treatment to get them off the streets and make them good citizens (doubt that's even applicable in this mild case), not punishments and negative stigmas. It seems like it all comes down to sexism that still pervades our society today.

crossing the line
First...as a vintage barista (I did it for ten years)...I left the biz while it was still considered a fun, easy way to make a LOT of money, NOT something you need an "entertainers permit" (aka: stripper permit) to work at a mocha stand.
Second....I have known one of those 5 girls since she was 5 years old, and I have to say I was suprised, and disappointed to see this story...while theres nothing wrong with being cute and dressing scanty (shorts & tank top, etc)...that's kind of a "given"....but the whip cream licking, butt & boob grabbing for money IS basically prostitution. Even strip clubs arent allowed to perform the type of things these girls are accused of doing...there is a line between prostituting yourself for money, and earning an honest living where you don't have to perform lewd acts in PUBLIC. Girls...you crossed that line...those things are for behind CLOSED doors.
I wish the little girl I watched grow up to be a drop dead beautiful young woman believed she deserves better than that.

Dear Mr Phillip Day and all...
Actually you are the one that is out of touch with society, watch TV from 8-10pm...guess what!?!? sex sells.

I am sorry that you disagree with me perhaps if you tell me how this situation effects you I would better understand.

That is what I spoke about it I am sorry you felt the need to attack my personal beliefs, and I also do not understand what my having a daughter would have to do with this. Are you suggesting that if I might feel differently? How of us parents is personal decision as well as what we raise our children to understand and believe.

To suggest that civil rights issues ended in the 60's and are only held by hippies is again a scary stance to take, the fight for what someone should be allowed to do with their body and mind happens everyday and should not be taken lightly and never should one give up on it.

The reason I am passionate about this case is quite clear if you read local news and replies to this article, the police need to focus on violent crime I live in Silver Lake 110th St to be exact.

On my street there is more drugs and violence then I have seen anywhere yet the police are slow to respond and so far ineffective about combating this, but yet they have plenty of time to devote to these baristas?

Unless you are directly effected by these girls how you think/feel about what they do is a non-issue, the only issue I truly have is that police time/funds/effort was wasted on this.

If the Everett Police spent as much time and effort in the Reflections By the Lake apartments I am positive they would have netted drug labs, drug dealers gang members and thieves, these people are not confined to stand on the side of the road that you can drive by and ignore if you so choose they are actively looking for people to exploit and harm young and old alike.

This news article just happens to fit my personal belief that police should spend more time taking on violent crime rather then what people consider "moral" crime.

Heehee! Who didn't see this coming? When you have women willing to strip down to pasties in public, you're gonna have prostitution. That's not being prudish or judgemental, it's just common sense- NOT that there is anything wrong with being prudish. If the owner wants to have a drive-through peep show he needs to get the permits required, etc. Oh, and those under 21 are not to be permited.

Everett bikini baristas charged with prostitution.
What's new? Unregistered Sex Offenders get to ROAM the streets of Everett due to TAX-FUNDS being diverted to the OBVIOUS. Let alone Robberies are on the Rise because all of the Officers are TOO busy flirting at the Coffee Stand. Goto the Bikini Place on 128th next to Taco Bell before noon, You'll see a Snohomish County Deputy Smiling in the Barista's FACE. Personally the girls told me they're tired of all the advances. Another great way to spend TAX Money. Unlike a few others and the People stealing Tax Money. Let's talk about the Joblesness in the Community.

Margaritaville North - Everett's Future?
Actually, no one was physically, mentally, or emotionally harmed by all of these shenanigans going on at the drive through espresso huts. It was a win-win situation for the baristas and their customers. The only ones who probably got hosed in the deal was the taxman. Instead of badgering the already burdened police to invstigate these (alleged) illicit activities, we - the Citizens of Everett - should be seeing this as a springboard to bringing a lot more revenue and excitement to our dreary, nondescript burg. Face the facts, Everett is boring and unremarkable place. Many decades ago, a city on the far opposite corner of the USA was dying a slow economic death. Long story short - Key West reinvented itself and became a mecca for carefree frolic and fun. It has something for everyone whether straight or gay, young or old...a good time is guaranteed for all. About the only thing that can get you in deep trouble with the law in Key West is carrying glass (bottles, glassware) out of the bars and into the streets. That's why the establishments all have "to go" cups! Lighten up Everett and learn to appreciate the variety of lifestyles and the spices of life.

Really??
My car was broken into once and stolen twice last year. cry My neighbors had their house broken into, the gang wanna-be's are selling drugs on street corners and what is Everett PD doing? Paying extra for Expresso. This is right up there with the free messages Everett PD was getting a few years ago. Your taxmoney at work. mad

There are a very low minority of people complaining about this so why are so many resources being used?

If your worried about your husband looking at a girl in a bikini then you have other issues in your relationship. Men look get over it! Now shut your eyes and go back to church dang it! Oh, and make sure your not watching Dancing with the Stars, Edita wears as little as these girls do. mrgreen

PS. Everett is second only to Tacoma for crime rate in Washington. Probably because we are so worried somebody might have unapproved sex

Why is it ok for men to walk around without shirts on but not for women?
Gee Mark that comment was too tempting to just sit there. After reading your non-sense and jibberish it is obvious that you beleive we all should step inline with your beliefs because of your wisdom and world views. You must be without children or daughters of your own.

In your wacky world society of the "Freedom Commune" you can do what you want, this was called the 60's "man" and if you go out to the cow fields of Fall City and Duvall you will fit right in and just walk around picking mushrooms and take your pants off and just wave to all the friendly people.

Good luck in your wacky world without "normal" morals. Here in the real world women walking around selling coffee in a see through top and bottomless is not what the majority of society wants. This is why the strip clubs are not for public view of minors.

Good luck and I'm sure you can still find a Love family commune up in Granite Falls.

Frightning response from people
Wow you people scare me...

At 18 you are an adult you can vote, gamble, and be drafted, but some of you want to claim that at 18 you are unable to make a decision? Lets think about that for a moment. One person was quick to claim that 18 was not old enough to form a choice, so let me ask what age is? You did not mention the baristas that were 20+.

The Woman's Rights movement was so ALL women could have the choice on what they could do with THEIR own INDIVIDUAL bodies, not what someone thinks they SHOULD be doing, this applies to everyone MALE AND FEMALE!

Some of you also need to look up the word exploited, then the word choice, after you have those words firmly in your brain go talk to ANY barista and ask her what she feels about what she is doing.

Why is it ok for men to walk around without shirts on but not for women?

After seeing these responses and the frighting response some of you have had, I am going to practice my First amendment rights and at the same time help to protect the rights and freedoms of these WOMEN, I am going 1 of these stands every day and I am going to buy 1 drink.

18 is a legal adult, people are free to decide how to spend their lives, and anyone that wants to take that away is call a tyrant, morals are not replacement for logic and thought...ever.

Prositution isn't harmless
Joe Snow, your vehement defense of the bikini baristas is eye-brow raising, to say the least. You quickly attack, well, no other poster, immediately resorting to name calling. One would wonder how often you frequent these places.

Sorry Joe, but an 18-year-old girl, yes, GIRL, selling her body is, indeed, hurting her. I don't care if they want to wear bikinis; you see that at the beach, but when they start doing soft-core porn acts, then it's time to say enough is enough. When it's out in public, the public can weigh in on it. What you do in the privacy of your home is one thing, but on the side of the street is another. Would you be so quick to defend a man exposing himself in full view of the public? Letting girls touch his privates? That's disgusting behavior.

Choice?
These women are all old enough to make their own decisions.. Someone called it "hurting these girls" & "exploitation" They have made the choice to do this, they aren't forced.. also it was said most of them aren't from here..this is true. I don't agree w/ what they're doing as of late.. but remember, these women have the right to choose to work doing what they want.. if none were willing, this guy would be out of business.. I say don't shut them down, just let them face what they did & pay for it, & get back to selling coffee in bikinis. This last part doesn't hurt anyone, just offends the closed (or small) minded. Thanks for your time.

You prudes would be best to worry about other things, like your own business. So WHAT if people are doing things that harm nobody? Tax the activities including drugs (yes ALL drugs) equally. Maybe you wouldn't complain so much about what other people like to do, if it eased your tax burden.

Many of us do not agree with your hypocritical holy roller stuff. Do you see us pushing for laws to make it punishable?

We call it Grab and Blow...
Do you really think those guys are going for a cup of coffee. From a 18 yr old?

Those stands are a "all cash business".

The overheads are minimal, there is a steady supply of skanks, oops I mean "barista's" that will do the job.

They will even reuse the coffee grounds to have a better margin.

Grab and Blow...whipped cream shows

latte
Yes Joe, all those "holy rollers" are out to ruin your life. If you don't like the laws they have "imposed" on you, march on down to City Hall and do something about it. Otherwise, head to Honey's and order a lap dance latte.

The question no one seems willing to ask is...

...How's the coffee?
