Northwest Briefly: State considers new rules on holiday displays, rallies
OLYMPIA — The state is considering several new rules on how state government buildings and property can be used in protests and holiday displays.
Under the proposed rules, display or exhibits could not be placed in the public areas of buildings on the Capitol campus, except for a state-sponsored “holiday” tree in the rotunda.
Another proposed rule would require a permit for rallies or protests that draw at least 25 people.
Yakima: West Nile virus kills woman
A 71-year-old Sunnyside woman may be the first West Nile virus death in Washington.
The Yakima Herald- Republic reported Ruth Rosalee Rogers died Saturday at a Yakima hospital and her husband said doctors told him his wife died of the West Nile virus.
State Health Department spokesman Gordon MacCracken said a sample has been sent to a Centers for Disease Control lab for confirmation.
SeaTac: Three die in fiery car crash
A car apparently was speeding when it left a road in the city of SeaTac, crashed into trees, a utility pole and a building and caught fire, killing three people.
King County sheriff's spokesman John Urquhart said the three killed in the crash about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday are all adults.
Witnesses arriving at the scene said flames were too intense to get near the car.
Seattle: Fall ferry schedule on Sunday
The Washington state ferry system starts the fall schedule on Sunday.
There will be only one round-trip sailing a day between Anacortes and Sidney, B.C.
Police arrest 2 more mugging suspects
Police say they now have all six people in custody who are suspected in a string of muggings and street robberies this month in the Seattle area.
Seattle detectives arrested two teens Tuesday in Auburn. Two others were arrested Sept. 15 and two more Sept. 17.
Spokane: Eastern State Hospital chief resigns in wake of escape
The head of Eastern State Hospital has resigned in the wake of last week's escape by a criminally insane man who stayed on the run for three days.
Hospital CEO Hal Wilson announced his resignation on Wednesday. He has contended the mental hospital did everything according to policies and procedures, despite widespread criticism from some hospital staffers and local law enforcement.
Patient Phillip Paul escaped from hospital custody during a trip to the Spokane County Interstate Fair with 30 other patients last Thursday.
He was committed to the hospital in 1987 for the slaying of a Sunnyside woman.
