New Boundaries Proposed for Seattle Public Schools

New boundaries that have been proposed for Seattle's public schools would return the district to a neighborhood-based system of assigning students, eventually guaranteeing kids a seat at a school close to home.

As part of the new plan, the district also wants to reopen five schools that had been closed in recent years.

The current system allows students to apply to any school in the district but doesn't guarantee them a spot at any particular school. Under the new plan, students will be assigned to schools based on their address. They'll have options, but no guarantee, to go elsewhere.

Before finalizing the boundaries, the district will hold nine public meetings to get parents' input. The board is scheduled to vote on the boundaries Nov. 18.
